Lavrio as an alternative to Piraeus and Rafina
Lavrio is in south-east Attica, about 60 km from central Athens and about 30 km from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos). It suits travellers coming from the Mesogeia area, Sounion Avenue or the airport. It is also a good choice if you want a nearby island such as Kea or Kythnos without crossing Athens to reach Piraeus.
The port is smaller and quieter than the two big ones, but the choice of destinations is narrower and changes with the season. To see what is running on the day you want to travel, use the search on this page and enter your date.
Where do ferries from Lavrio go?
Kea and Kythnos: the nearby islands
These are the port's most frequent routes. Kea is about an hour away on conventional ferries, and in summer there are several departures a day, in the morning and the afternoon. Kythnos takes about 1 hour 40 minutes on the fastest ferry and around 2.5 hours on ferries that make intermediate stops. Times vary by day and operator, so check your exact date before booking accommodation.
Central and southern Cyclades
Ferries run from Lavrio to Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, Kimolos, Folegandros and Sikinos. There are also services to Syros, Paros, Naxos, Ios and Mykonos, mainly on long routes with many stops, so journey time matters here. Paros, for example, can take around 8 hours, while Kimolos and Folegandros can take more than 13 hours when the ferry calls at many islands. If you want a fast connection to Mykonos, Paros or Naxos, always compare with Piraeus and Rafina before you decide.
North-east Aegean
Lavrio is one of the few ports in Attica with a route to Lemnos and Agios Efstratios. The Lemnos crossing is an overnight sailing of about 9 hours, leaving in the afternoon or evening and arriving around midnight or in the early hours. If you are taking a car, expect to arrive early in the morning.
Ferry companies and types of ferry
The operators shown on our site are Seajets, Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways. Seajets serves the Lemnos route and some Cyclades connections. Blue Star Ferries runs the large conventional ships, with intermediate stops at Kythnos and the southern Cyclades. For Kea and Kythnos there are also smaller local companies, such as Goutos Lines, with several departures a day.
Conventional ferries are slower, but they carry cars and motorbikes and have indoor seating areas, cafés and open decks. Price and journey time can differ noticeably between ferries to the same destination, so the choice usually comes down to whether you want the quickest arrival or need to take a car.
When to book
- July–August and weekends: ferries to Kea and Kythnos fill up quickly, especially for cars. Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead.
- Farther islands: there are only a few sailings a week to the Cyclades. If you miss your ferry, the next one may be a day or two later.
- Off-season: timetables thin out and there are fewer departures, but you can usually still find a ticket at the last minute.
- Timetable changes: companies publish winter and summer schedules separately. Check your date before booking a hotel.
How to get to the port
By car, take Lavriou Avenue, the Attiki Odos motorway or Mesogeion Avenue. From central Athens the drive takes about an hour and a half, depending on traffic.
KTEL Attica buses run from Nomismatokopeio (a metro station) and from Pedion tou Areos (Areos Park), with around 12 departures a day, more in summer. From the airport, a bus leaves roughly every hour from the arrivals level, via Markopoulo, and costs about €5. The KTEL bus station is in the centre of Lavrio, and from there it is a walk to the quays. If you have heavy luggage or a very early ferry, a taxi from the airport is the safer option.
Travel tips
- Book a ticket with a car early, as space is limited on the smaller ferries.
- Arrive at the port at least 45–60 minutes before departure, and earlier if you have a car.
- Parking is not allowed inside the port. There are private car parks nearby, at roughly €6 a day, and free spaces on the town's streets.
- In strong winds a sailing ban may apply. Sailings from Lavrio have sometimes been cancelled while ferries from Piraeus and Rafina run as normal. If you have tight connections, allow a spare day.
- If you are continuing to a more distant island, check the connection for each day, as not every route runs daily.
