Port information
- Port: Ermoupoli, right in the town. When you leave the ferry you step straight onto the waterfront, and Miaouli Square is about a 5-minute walk away.
- Buses (KTEL): the bus station is at the port, on Akti Papagou, near the vehicle exit. You buy your ticket on the bus, and fares to the villages cost around €2. Services run to Galissas, Finikas, Posidonia, Megas Gialos, Vari, Azolimnos and Kini.
- Taxis: there is a taxi rank near the port and at Miaouli Square. In summer there are few taxis available, so for early-morning or late-night transfers book your taxi in advance. There is also a 24-hour taxi dispatch service.
- Parking: Nisaki, next to the port, is paid parking and the closest to the centre. There is free parking at Doxa, Karnagio and Lalakia. In August these fill up quickly, so arrive early.
- Airport: about 5 km from the town, a 10–15 minute taxi ride.
- Ano Syros: most people walk up the steps. For those who find that difficult, there is a free municipal minibus, or you can take a taxi. The stone steps are not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.
- Before boarding: there is a lot of bus and taxi traffic at the disembarkation area, so take care if you're walking along the quayside with luggage.
How to get to Syros by ferry
You can reach Syros from two ports in Attica, Piraeus and Lavrio. Both sail to the port of Ermoupoli. From Ermoupoli you can carry on to Mykonos, Paros and Tinos, so Syros is often used as a stopover when island hopping.
Piraeus to Syros: the main route
This is the busiest route. There are usually 3 to 5 sailings a day, and in July and August there can be as many as 6. The first ferries leave at around 07:00. The journey time depends on the type of ferry:
- High-speed (Seajets): about 2 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes. Tickets cost around €60. High-speed services don't necessarily run every day all year, so check your date.
- Conventional (Blue Star Ferries): from 3 hours 35 minutes to 4 hours 5 minutes. Economy class starts at around €37–46, and the ferry carries cars and motorbikes.
If you're not in a hurry, the conventional ferry is cheaper, has more space and is a steadier ride when it's windy. If you only have one day, or want to spend more time on the island, the high-speed ferry saves about two hours.
Lavrio to Syros: the cheapest option
The Lavrio route is why the 'from' price on this page starts at €18. The crossing is slow, about 5.5 hours with intermediate stops at other islands, and there are only a few sailings a week. The ferry that has served the route in recent years is the Artemis. The operator is named differently depending on the source, so check the company on your ticket before you pay. It suits anyone staying in eastern or southern Attica, as Lavrio is about 35 minutes from the Athens airport area and 45 minutes from central Athens. It's also a good choice if you're travelling with a car and want to avoid the traffic around Piraeus.
Which ferry company should you choose?
Blue Star Ferries, Seajets and Hellenic Seaways all operate to Syros. Blue Star is the main choice for a conventional ferry and for anyone taking a vehicle. Seajets is the fastest on the Piraeus route. Lavrio is served by the fleet of the same group. Before you choose, check three things: the arrival time, the type of ferry, and whether the price is for economy class or another category.
From Syros to other islands
Three routes from Ermoupoli are searched for often:
- Syros to Tinos: the shortest, about 15 to 40 minutes. Tickets start at around €12.
- Syros to Mykonos: about 45 minutes on the faster sailings.
- Syros to Paros: about 1 hour to 1 hour 45 minutes, with high-speed prices starting at around €65.
Inter-island timetables in the Cyclades change more than those from Piraeus, and in winter they are cut back noticeably. If you're planning a trip with 2–3 islands, book the long crossing first and the short ones afterwards.
When to book
- For July–August, and for the long weekends around 15 August (a major Greek public holiday) and Greek Orthodox Easter, book as early as possible, especially if you have a car. Vehicle spaces sell out first.
- For May–June and September–October, 1–2 weeks ahead is usually enough, except for weekends.
- In winter there are fewer high-speed ferries and sailings are less frequent, but Syros doesn't 'shut down'. It has a permanent population and year-round business.
Practical tips
- Syros is easy to explore without a car: buses (KTEL) and taxis cover the main beaches. If you want to reach more remote spots, rent a small car and ask your host where to park in Ermoupoli.
- You don't need a vehicle in Ermoupoli itself. Miaouli Square, Vaporia and the steps up to Ano Syros are all reachable on foot.
- Check the boarding time on your ticket. If you're taking a car, you usually need to be at the port earlier than foot passengers.
- If you have a flight or another connection on the same day, allow some extra time in case of delays, especially when the summer meltemi winds are blowing.
