Port information
- Where it is: the port is in Tinos Town (Chora), and all ferries arrive there.
- To the Church of Panagia Evangelistria: it is about 800 metres up from the port. You can walk up Megalochari Street in around 15–20 minutes, or take a taxi.
- Getting around: taxis and buses to the villages and beaches leave from the port area. Check bus timetables before you set off.
- Parking: there is space near the port, but it fills up in August and around 15 August. If you don't need a car, leave it on the mainland.
- Checking your ticket: check the departure time and quay on the day of travel, as they can change depending on the ship and the weather.
- Arrival: arrive at the port at least 45 minutes before a high-speed departure, and 1–2 hours before if you have a vehicle.
- Weather: in strong meltemi winds, high-speed ferries are delayed or cancelled more often. Allow a few hours' buffer for connections.
How to get to Tinos
Tinos has no airport, so the ferry is the only way to reach the island. There are three main departure points: Rafina, Piraeus and Syros. There are also connections from Mykonos, and the page shows sailings to Paros, Naxos and Santorini. On ferryfast.gr you can see all the ferry companies (Blue Star Ferries, Seajets, Golden Star Ferries, Fast Ferries) in one place and compare times, journey durations and prices before you book.
Rafina or Piraeus?
From Rafina
For most travellers this is the most practical option. The crossing is shorter, with roughly 2 to 8 departures a day depending on the season. By high-speed ferry the journey takes from 1 hour 30 minutes to about 2 hours. By conventional ferry it takes around 3 to 4 hours, because some sailings call at another island on the way. Rafina is also closer to Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos), so it is handy if you are arriving by plane.
Conventional ferries typically cost around €27 and high-speed ferries €50–60. Prices vary with the date and availability. Children under 5 usually travel free.
From Piraeus
Piraeus has fewer sailings to Tinos, around 1–2 a day, operated by Seajets and Blue Star Ferries. The distance is greater (about 77 nautical miles). The journey takes from around 2 hours 25 minutes by high-speed ferry to over 5 hours by conventional ferry, and tickets cost roughly €40 to €78. Piraeus is a good choice if you are staying in Athens near a metro station, if you want the deck space and comfort of a larger ship, or if you are continuing to other islands.
From Syros
If you are island hopping in the Cyclades, Syros is the closest connection. The crossing is short and inexpensive. The lowest fares shown on the page, from €12, usually apply to short inter-island routes like this one.
High-speed or conventional ferry?
- High-speed ferry: you save 1.5–2 hours but pay almost double. Seating is indoors only, and these boats are more affected by bad weather.
- Conventional ferry: cheaper, with outdoor decks, and the only option if you are taking a car or heavy luggage. For a car from Rafina, allow around €67 per crossing, and around €23 for a motorbike. Bicycles are usually carried free of charge.
Continuing south
Tinos is very close to Mykonos, around 20–30 minutes by ferry, and many people combine the two islands. There are separate sailings to Paros and Naxos. Santorini is much further away and the journey often takes longer or requires a different route, so check the duration carefully before you book.
When to book
- 15 August (Feast of the Assumption): this is the biggest day of the year on Tinos, and tickets for the whole week sell out months in advance. Book as early as you can, especially if you want a cabin, a seat or a space for your car.
- July–August and weekends: book 3–4 weeks ahead. Morning high-speed ferries from Rafina fill up first.
- Spring and autumn: there is more availability and lower prices. Tinos is lovely in April–May and September–October, without the summer crowds.
Weather and the meltemi winds
Tinos is known for its strong winds. In July and August the meltemi can delay or cancel sailings, mainly high-speed ones. Don't book a flight home on the same day as your ferry, and leave a buffer of a few hours. If your schedule is tight, a conventional ferry is usually the safer choice.
A day trip to Tinos or an overnight stay?
With a morning high-speed ferry from Rafina and an evening return, you get about 6–8 hours on the island. That is enough for the Church of Panagia Evangelistria and Tinos Town (Chora), and perhaps one village. To explore the villages (Pyrgos, Volax, Komi), the dovecotes and the beaches, two to three nights is a better fit.
Tips before you travel
- Arrive at the port at least 45 minutes before a high-speed departure, and about 1–2 hours before if you are taking a car.
- Check your ticket for the departure port and the quay your ship leaves from, especially in Piraeus.
- Timetables change with the season and the day of the week. Check the schedule for your own travel date.
- If you are thinking of taking a car, consider whether you really need one. Tinos Town is small and walkable, and there are buses, taxis and vehicle rental for getting to the villages.
