How to get to Samothrace

The island has no scheduled flights, so the main way to get there is the ferry from Alexandroupoli to Samothrace. The crossing takes about 1 hour 45 minutes and arrives at Kamariotissa, the island's main port. The route is operated by Fast Ferries, usually with one or two sailings a day, including a morning and an afternoon departure from Alexandroupoli. Exact timetables change by season, so check the available times in the timetable on this page before you plan your journey.

If you are travelling from further afield, the hard part is getting to Alexandroupoli. From Thessaloniki there are daily intercity KTEL coaches, and the journey takes 4–5 hours. Alexandroupoli has an airport, about 10 minutes by car from the port. If you fly in, book the ferry for the following day, or leave plenty of time if you want to sail the same day.

Via Lemnos

Samothrace is also linked with Lemnos, usually three times a week. The crossing takes about 2 hours 45 minutes. Lemnos has an airport, so this route suits travellers coming from Athens who would rather not go via Thrace. As there are only a few sailings, book the ferry first and your flight afterwards.

Prices and what affects the cost

The "from €9" price is for a foot passenger outside the summer. From September to May a standard ticket usually costs €9–12. In June, July and August it rises to €17–21, depending on whether you choose deck class or an assigned seat. For a car, the usual range is €39–47 off-season and €55–65 in summer. For a motorbike, allow around €8 and €14 respectively. These prices are a guide only, and the final fare is shown when you book.

Discounted tickets are available for students, children, large families, passengers with disabilities and permanent island residents. Carry the relevant proof with you, as it may be checked at boarding.

When to book

  • With a car in July and August: book as early as you can. Vehicle spaces on this route sell out and the ship is small.
  • On foot in summer: one to two weeks ahead is usually enough. For weekends and the 15 August holiday, book earlier.
  • Off-season: the route runs all year round, with fewer sailings. Check the return sailings too, as the weather can change your plans.
  • For 2027: summer schedules are usually announced in spring. If you are planning ahead, start from the route page and book your ticket as soon as your dates open.

Practical tips for the journey

This is a short-crossing ferry with indoor lounges and assigned seats, but no cabins. Arrive at Alexandroupoli port 45–60 minutes before departure, especially if you have a vehicle. The port is next to the railway station and the town centre, so if you arrive early you will have cafés and places to eat nearby.

Whether to bring a car depends on how much you plan to explore. The island is mountainous, with Mount Saos rising to 1,611 metres, and the sights are spread out. For the rock pools, the Sanctuary of the Great Gods and Chora, a car or motorbike helps a lot. If you are staying only in Kamariotissa, you can manage with taxis and a few bus services, but plan your transport in advance.

What you'll find on arrival

Kamariotissa is small but lively, with seafront tavernas, mini-markets, a bakery and small hotels. Chora, the traditional village on the hillside, is about 5–6 km away, and its castle is a good spot for sunset. The Sanctuary of the Great Gods, at Palaiopoli, is the island's archaeological site and includes the Arsinoeion. Samothrace is also known for its vathres, natural rock pools in the streams, the best known being the Fonias pools and Gria Vathra. The first Fonias pool is easy to reach, while the others need a walk and proper footwear. In July and August it gets fairly busy, so go early in the morning.

When to go

For swimming and the rock pools, the best time is from late June to early September. In June and September the island is quieter and the ferries less full. Visitor numbers are growing: in the first eight months of 2026, passenger numbers were about 5% higher than the year before, so vehicle spaces may sell out earlier.
