Port information

  • Arrival port: the New Port at Tourlos, about 2–2.5 km north of Chora and about 4 km from the airport.
  • Old Port: next to Chora, for small boats and excursion boats to Delos. It is not the port used by most ferries.
  • Sea Bus: connects the New Port with the Old Port in about 10–12 minutes and takes luggage. The ticket costs about €2, and boats run roughly every 30 minutes until late in the evening; check the seasonal timetable.
  • Bus: there is a service to Chora, but it isn't very frequent. Plan around the timetable.
  • Taxi: there are few taxis and they are hard to find in July and August. For the airport or the ferry, book a transfer in advance.
  • On foot: not recommended, as the road to Chora is busy and has no pavements.
  • Parking: there is a car park at the New Port, with limited spaces and no supervision. According to available sources it is free, but confirm before you travel.
  • Services: the port area is open 24 hours. In Tourlos there are tavernas, cafés and hotels, but no supermarkets; you'll find those in Chora.
  • If the weather turns bad: if conditions get difficult, confirm your departure with the ferry company or travel agency and keep your ticket with you.

How to get to Mykonos by ferry

You can reach Mykonos from eight ports: Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Syros, Tinos, Paros, Naxos and Santorini. Tickets start from €11, but that price usually applies to the nearby islands and economy class. From Athens, the price depends on whether you choose a conventional ferry or a high-speed one, and on how early you book.

From Athens: Piraeus, Rafina or Lavrio?

Piraeus has the most options: conventional ferries, which take around 5–6 hours with intermediate stops, and high-speed ferries with a much shorter journey time. Rafina is a good choice if you're staying in east Attica or arriving from the airport, as you save the trip to Piraeus. However, sailings from Rafina are often affected by strong northerly winds. Lavrio is the third option, with fewer sailings that depend on the season. It's worth considering if you want to avoid the traffic around Athens and Piraeus.

Before you book, compare your whole journey, not just the time on the boat. A route that takes half an hour longer but leaves from a port closer to you may well turn out to be quicker overall.

From the other islands

Mykonos is one of the most popular stops for island hopping in the Cyclades. Tinos and Syros are the closest, with crossings from around half an hour. Paros and Naxos are usually about an hour away by high-speed ferry. From Santorini, allow around 2–3 hours, depending on the vessel and the stops. There are also sailings from Mykonos to Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Piraeus and Rafina, so you can plan a round trip too.

Which ferry companies operate the route

The companies running the route are Seajets, Golden Star Ferries, Fast Ferries and Blue Star Ferries. Blue Star and conventional ferries are generally a good choice if you're travelling with a car or a lot of luggage, or if you want a deck and room to move around. High-speed ferries win on time, but they have limited vehicle capacity and stricter luggage limits, and they are more affected by the weather. If you have a car, check that your particular sailing accepts vehicles. For Mykonos, though, a car often isn't worth it: parking in Chora is difficult in summer, and you can hire a vehicle on the island if you need one.

When to book for 2027

  • July–August and the mid-August holiday (15 August): book as early as you can, especially for high-speed ferries, cabins and cars. The most convenient sailings sell out first.
  • June and September: there is usually more availability and a calmer schedule. For most people this is the best time to visit Mykonos.
  • May and October: there are fewer sailings, but the island is up and running as normal. Check the timetables before you commit to accommodation.
  • Winter: connections are mostly limited to conventional ferries from Piraeus and Rafina, and many businesses on the island are closed.

Each summer's timetables are released gradually by the ferry companies. If you can't yet see the sailing you want, don't assume it doesn't exist: check again closer to your travel date.

Weather and the meltemi winds

In July and August, northerly winds (the meltemi) are common and can cause delays or cancellations, mainly on high-speed ferries and on sailings from Rafina. If you have a departure flight, don't plan to take the ferry on the same day. Leave a margin of at least one night, and choose a flexible ticket where one is available.

Arriving in Mykonos: which port?

Mykonos has two ports. Almost all scheduled sailings, both conventional and high-speed, arrive at the New Port at Tourlos. The Old Port, next to Chora, mainly serves small boats and the excursion boats to Delos. Chora (Mykonos Town) is the island's main town, but ferries don't dock there: you get there by Sea Bus or by bus.

The New Port is about 2–2.5 km from Chora and around 4 km from the airport. On the map it looks walkable, but the road is busy and has no pavements, so it isn't recommended with luggage. See the practical port information below.

Tips before you book

  • Check the departure port on your ticket. At Piraeus, the gates vary by company, and Rafina has its own timetable.
  • For transfers to and from the airport, book transport in advance in July and August, as taxis are hard to find.
  • If you're combining Mykonos with Santorini or Naxos, also look at routes with a stopover, as they sometimes work out cheaper.
  • Bring photo ID or your passport with you; you will be asked for it at boarding.
