- Parking: parking inside Piraeus port is not allowed. Look for a private car park near the gate and reserve a space before you travel.
- With a vehicle: arrive at least 1 hour before departure, with your e-ticket ready on your phone. Only conventional ferries carry vehicles.
- Arrival ports: Aegina Town, the main port (west), Agia Marina (east, seasonal) and Souvala (north).
- Getting around from Aegina Town port: the Aegina KTEL bus starts here and goes to Aphaia, Agia Marina, Marathonas and Perdika. Taxis and vehicle rentals are also available.
- Agia Marina: a small port served by high-speed boats and ferries to and from Piraeus and other Saronic islands, operating seasonally, with a bus stop near the port.
How to get to Aegina
You can only reach Aegina by sea, and the departure port is Piraeus. The Piraeus – Aegina route runs every day, and in summer there are dozens of departures daily. Tickets for 2027 are released gradually, as they are every year. Prices on this page start from €9, which is the passenger fare on a conventional ferry. The sailings shown on the page are operated by Blue Star Ferries. Other companies also serve the route, and timetables change from season to season, so check the date you plan to travel.
High-speed or conventional ferry: the choice that matters
The decision mostly depends on whether you are bringing a vehicle and how long you want to spend at sea.
High-speed boat (Flying Dolphin hydrofoils and similar)
- The crossing takes about 30–40 minutes, and only about 30 to Agia Marina.
- Tickets usually start at around €14–20, depending on the sailing.
- It does not carry cars or motorbikes.
- It suits a day trip, or any time you want to save time.
Conventional ferry
- The journey takes roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes.
- It is the cheapest option, from €9 per passenger.
- It carries cars and motorbikes. For a car, budget roughly €24–31 per crossing, and for two adults with a car the total is often around €34–40.
- It has indoor lounges and an open deck, which is pleasant for the trip if you have time.
If you are going for one day without a car, the high-speed boat gives you more hours on the island. If you are staying several days or want your own vehicle, the conventional ferry is the sensible choice and costs less.
Which port in Aegina to arrive at
The island has three ports, and your choice affects the rest of your trip.
- Aegina Town port: on the west side, with the most sailings all year round. This is the right choice if you are staying in Aegina Town or want to start from the centre.
- Agia Marina: on the east side, with the shortest crossings (about 30 minutes) and seasonal service, roughly April to November. It is convenient for the Temple of Aphaia and the beaches nearby.
- Souvala: on the north side, with a crossing of about 1 hour 5 minutes. It is a quieter option and has fewer departures.
Before you pay, look at the arrival port and not just the time. A sailing that arrives at Agia Marina may suit you more or less than one that arrives at Aegina Town, depending on where you are staying.
When to book
On conventional ferries, car spaces on the vehicle deck fill up first. Don't leave it to the last minute at weekends, in August or on public holidays. As a foot passenger you have more flexibility and can usually find a seat even on the same day, except at peak times such as Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. For 2027 tickets the general rule applies: the earlier you book, the more times and ferry types you have to choose from. If you are returning from a day trip, check the last sailings from Aegina to Piraeus, as in summer they leave at around 20:00–21:00 and in winter earlier.
When to go
Aegina is active all year round, not just in summer, which is why sailings do not stop in winter. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking and visiting the ancient sites. In August the island fills up with visitors from Athens. The Pistachio Festival takes place in early or mid September (in 2026 it ran from 17 to 20 September). If you want to catch it, book your ferry and accommodation early and check the exact 2027 dates once they are announced.
What to do after you arrive
- Temple of Aphaia: from Aegina Town it takes about 25 minutes by bus or 15–20 minutes by taxi. It stands above Agia Marina.
- Perdika: a fishing village about 9 km from Aegina Town, with seafood tavernas. Small boats leave from here for the islet of Moni, a trip of about 10 minutes.
- Beaches: Agia Marina and Marathonas are the easiest to reach by bus.
- Aegina pistachios: buy them in Aegina Town, and try the pistachio sweets too.
The Aegina KTEL bus starts from the town port and goes to Aphaia, Agia Marina, Marathonas and Perdika, with a ticket costing about €2. If you plan to see more than two places in one day, rent a car or scooter on the island instead of bringing your own. That way you avoid the vehicle ticket and parking in Piraeus.
Tips for an easier trip
- Parking inside Piraeus port is not allowed. If you come by car and are not taking it on the ferry, reserve a space in a private car park near the gate.
- The metro to Piraeus station is the most comfortable way to get there, and from the station it is a few minutes' walk to Gate E8.
- If you are travelling with a vehicle, arrive at least one hour before departure.
- Keep your e-ticket on your phone and make sure the vehicle is declared in your booking.
- For a day trip, allow 8–9 hours on the island so you can fit in Aphaia, a beach stop and a meal without rushing.
