How to get from Piraeus to Chios
There are no high-speed ferries on this route. All sailings are operated by conventional passenger and car ferries run by Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways. This means cabins, aircraft-style seats, bars and space for a car or motorbike. It also means the journey is overnight or long. The fastest sailing takes about 6 hours 55 minutes, while the slowest takes 14 hours 15 minutes.
If you want to arrive sooner, there is also a flight from Athens to Chios, which takes around 45 minutes. Choose the ferry if you want to bring a car, travel with as much luggage as you like, or sleep on board and step onto the island in the morning.
Timetables by day and ferry company
The schedule changes by day and by season, so choose your day first and then your ship.
- Monday and Wednesday: the Hellenic Seaways Nissos Samos departs at 20:00 and arrives at 04:15, a journey of about 8 hours 15 minutes.
- Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday: the Blue Star Diagoras departs at 20:00 and arrives at 05:00. This is the best-value option, from €40 per person for a deck ticket. On Tuesdays there is also a second sailing at 16:00 with Blue Star Myconos. It arrives at 06:15 and is the longest sailing on the route.
- Friday: Blue Star Myconos departs at 15:00 and arrives at 04:55. Nissos Samos departs at 20:00 and arrives at 05:50.
- Saturday: in the summer season, Blue Star Ariadne departs at 22:00 and arrives at 04:55. It is the shortest sailing, at 6 hours 55 minutes.
The difference in journey time between ships comes down to the stops. Some sailings call at intermediate ports, while others go more directly. If you have no reason to spend many hours on board, choose the sailings of 8–9 hours.
Prices and when to book
Prices start from €40 for the Diagoras in winter. In summer, the Nissos Samos has an economy ticket from €49. The final price depends on the day, the type of seat (deck, aircraft-style seat or cabin) and whether you are taking a vehicle. A car costs considerably more than a passenger ticket.
For 2027, Blue Star has already announced its timetable for the period 1 November 2026 – 31 October 2027. According to initial local information, the Diagoras will operate the link with northern Greece from late May to mid-September. Times may differ from the current ones, so check the exact date in the search form before you decide.
- July–August: book 4–6 weeks ahead, especially if you have a car or want a cabin. Around 15 August (a major public holiday in Greece), sailings fill up quickly.
- Orthodox Easter (2 May in 2027): Chios is very busy because of the famous Rocket War in Vrontados on Holy Saturday. Book early.
- Winter and spring: there is usually availability even a few days beforehand, but the cheapest deck tickets sell out first.
Which sailing to choose
To arrive early in the morning
The 20:00 evening sailings reach Chios at around 04:15–05:00. If you have not arranged early access to your room, ask your accommodation to wait for you or to allow early check-in. A cabin helps you rest and arrive in better shape.
With a car
Chios is a large island, over 40 km from the north to the southern villages. Piraeus is about 223 km away by sea. With your own vehicle you can easily reach the mastic villages (Pyrgi, Mesta, Olympi), Nea Moni, Anavatos and the beaches of the south. If you are not bringing a car, rent one on the island, as local buses to the villages are infrequent.
If you are coming from another city
If you are arriving in Piraeus from another city the same afternoon, choose the 20:00 sailings rather than the 15:00 or 16:00 ones. That leaves you a safety margin in case of delays.
