How to get to Alonissos

Alonissos is the third and quietest of the main Northern Sporades islands, about 3 kilometres east of Skopelos. It has no airport. Your journey starts either on the Greek mainland or on one of the neighbouring islands, and all ferries arrive at Patitiri, the main port on the south-east coast.

At the moment this page does not show timetables or prices for the port. The 2027 schedules have not been announced yet and usually come out a few months before the season starts. What you read below is based on the pattern of recent years. Check exact times in the search before you book.

From Volos: the main route

Volos is the port most visitors use. It is about 3.5 hours by road from Athens and 2 hours from Thessaloniki. Ferries usually call at Skiathos and Skopelos first, so Alonissos is the last stop.

Journey time depends on the type of vessel. High-speed ferries and Flying Dolphin hydrofoils take around 3 hours. Slower sailings with more stops can take 4.5 to 5 hours. Check the arrival time when you compare options: a morning departure gives you the whole afternoon on the island.

From Agios Konstantinos

There used to be a connection from Agios Konstantinos as well. In a recent timetable check, this route showed no available sailings. If you are thinking of leaving from there to cut down the drive from Athens, confirm that a schedule exists for your dates. Volos remains the safest choice.

From Skiathos and Skopelos

If you fly to Skiathos, which has an airport, Alonissos is about 1.5 hours away by ferry. From Skopelos the trip is much shorter, from about 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on whether the boat leaves from Skopelos Town or from Glossa. These sailings are more frequent in summer and become much less frequent in winter, so don't plan a day trip out of season without checking the timetable.

There are also connections from Thessaloniki and from Mantoudi on Evia. Both are seasonal and run only a few times a week, so they need to be confirmed for each date.

Which ferry to choose

  • Flying Dolphin hydrofoils (Aegean Flying Dolphins): fast, but they don't carry cars and have a luggage limit. Best for travellers without a vehicle.
  • High-speed ferries (SeaJets): the most common choice, with good frequencies in peak season. The morning departure from Volos is the most convenient if you want a full day on the island.
  • Conventional ferries: slower, but less affected by rough weather, and they can carry vehicles where this is offered. Check the "vehicles" label before you pay.

Tickets from Volos have recently cost roughly €30 to €40 per person, depending on the operator and time of day. Sailings between the Sporades islands are cheaper, at around €6 to €10. Treat these amounts as a guide, as 2027 prices will be set when the schedules are published.

When to book

For July and August, especially if you are travelling with a car, at a weekend or around 15 August (a major public holiday in Greece), book as soon as the timetables are released. High-speed ferries sell out first. For June and September, a few weeks ahead is usually enough. In winter there are fewer sailings and cancellations because of strong winds are more common, so allow a spare day before any flight or onward connection.

Travel tips

  • The first departure from Alonissos to Volos is very early, around 06:10 in recent timetables. If you have a flight home from Athens, book a night in Volos.
  • Some sailings run only on certain days of the week. Check the day, not just the time.
  • If you want to see Skopelos or Skiathos too, book each leg separately rather than a single through ticket, for more flexibility.
  • The island has no extensive public transport network: there is a bus from Patitiri to other parts of the island, and taxis and vehicle hire at the port. For beaches such as Steni Vala or Kokkinokastro, consider a scooter or a taxi.

What to do after you arrive

Patitiri has cafés and tavernas along the waterfront, and the excursion boats to the National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades leave from here. Chora, the old village, sits high up a few kilometres from the port. It is well worth a visit for the sunset and its less touristy atmosphere.
