Port information

  • Arrival port: Livadi, on the south-east coast. It is the only port on Serifos, and all ferries from Piraeus and Lavrio dock here.
  • Chora: about 5 km above the port. You can get there by the local bus, which starts from Livadi, or by taxi.
  • Beach: Livadakia is about a 5–10 minute walk. Livadi beach is even closer.
  • Bus: the Livadi – Chora service costs around €2.20 and runs less often outside summer. In summer, extra seasonal buses run to beaches and villages.
  • Taxis: there are only a few. If you need a transfer after arrival, arrange it in advance.
  • Car and scooter rental: car and scooter rental offices are in Livadi, close to the port.
  • Parking: limited in Livadi and even more so in Chora, particularly on August evenings.
  • Services at the port: tavernas, cafés, a supermarket, a pharmacy and shops within a few minutes of the quay.
  • Good to know: in strong winds, arrivals and departures may be delayed. Leave a buffer before a flight or any other commitment.

How to get to Serifos

Serifos has no airport, so the ferry is the only practical way to get there. The main connection is Piraeus – Serifos, operated by three companies listed on this page: Blue Star Ferries, Seajets and Fast Ferries. The second route, Lavrio – Serifos, is mainly seasonal. To see which departures run on your dates, enter them in the search form at the top of the page.

The "from €31" price is the lowest fare we find. It is usually for an economy seat on a conventional ferry on a date with good availability. High-speed boats from Piraeus start noticeably higher, at around €60 and up, depending on the season and how early you book.

Conventional ferry or high-speed boat: what actually changes

The distance from Piraeus is about 46 nautical miles, and the main difference between the options is journey time:

  • High-speed boat (Seajets): about 2 hours on a direct sailing. If it makes an intermediate stop, for example at Kythnos, the journey rises to around 2 hours 40 minutes. It is the best choice for a weekend or a short break.
  • Conventional ferry: about 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours 15 minutes. It is cheaper, has more comfortable deck space, and is easier if you are taking a car or motorbike.

If you are not taking a vehicle, the high-speed boat saves you around two hours. The conventional ferry is worth it when cost matters more than arrival time, or when you are travelling with children and luggage. In strong winds, high-speed boats are the first to be affected, so avoid planning a tight connection with a flight on the same day.

Lavrio or Piraeus?

Piraeus has the most departures and the widest choice of companies, especially in the winter months. Lavrio is convenient if you are coming from the eastern suburbs of Athens or the airport and would rather avoid the centre of Piraeus. Sailings from there usually take around 2.5 hours. However, they do not run all year and change from season to season, so check that there is a departure on your dates before you commit to transfers and accommodation.

How often do ferries run?

In summer there are departures almost every day, and in July and August there may be several during the day. In winter the connection stays open but thins out to a few departures a week. If you are travelling off-season, check which days have a ferry first and then book your accommodation. Serifos is part of the western Cyclades. The same Seajets line links Kythnos, Serifos, Sifnos, Kimolos and Milos, so you can combine several islands in one trip without going back to Piraeus.

When to book for 2027

Summer 2027 timetables are being released gradually by the ferry companies. Tickets open first for the nearest months and then for the peak season. A few practical rules:

  • For July and August, especially around the 15 August holiday, book as soon as the sailing appears. Car spaces on conventional ferries sell out first.
  • For May, June and September you can usually find a seat with just a few weeks' notice, but the cheapest fares go earlier.
  • If you are travelling on a Friday afternoon or a Sunday evening, book earlier than you would for a midweek sailing.
  • Check the return sailing before you confirm your outbound trip. The last return of the day can be quite early.

Arriving in Livadi

All ferries dock at Livadi, on the south-east coast, in a sheltered bay. It is the island's only port, and you will find tavernas, cafés, a pharmacy, a supermarket and vehicle rental there. Chora sits high above the port, about 5 km away by road. A bus links it with the port, while walking up is hard going. Livadakia beach is about a five-minute walk from the port. The more distant beaches, such as Psili Ammos, Agios Sostis and Ganema, need a vehicle or the seasonal beach bus.

Taking a car on the ferry or renting on the island?

For a stay of three to five days, renting a scooter or car in Livadi is usually simpler and cheaper than bringing your own vehicle on the ferry. However, if you have children or a lot of luggage, or you are taking a conventional ferry anyway, having your own car gives you flexibility. Bear in mind that parking in Chora and Livadi is limited, especially on August evenings.

Tips before you travel

  • Note your departure port area and gate at Piraeus. They are shown on your ticket and differ by ship, and getting around the port takes time.
  • Arrive at the port at least 45–60 minutes before departure, or 90 minutes if you have a vehicle.
  • In strong winds, sailings may be changed or cancelled. Leave a one-day buffer before any flight home.
  • There are only a few taxis on Serifos. If you have heavy luggage and are staying in Chora, arrange your pick-up in advance.
